Microblading: Is it worth it?

Do you use an eyebrow pencil to make your eyebrows look fuller? Do you want your brows permanently “on fleek?” If so, then you should look into Microblading (eyebrow embroidery). After years of researching Microblading, I finally did it! If interested in this procedure, keep reading! And after reading you still feel like you want to do it…do your own research before jumping in!

What is Microblading? It is a semi-permanent tattoo that fills in and shapes eyebrows giving them a natural look without applying any make-up! A skilled Microblading artist uses a very small blade to deposit pigment under the skin, giving the appearance of hair. This is a perfect solution for thin or non-existent eyebrows. No more Pam Anderson eyebrows! Microblading creates natural looking strokes using a custom color to create a full & multidimensional look! This picture to the right is a comparison of my brows before Microblading (on top) and after the first session (bottom). What a difference it makes!

How much does Microblading Cost? Microblading is very expensive. Luckily, I had the opportunity to be a model for a new and licensed artist and got mine for free! Check instagram for artists looking for models for free or at half price in your area. This does come with a risk of getting someone inexperienced and you may not get what you want. I found mine by looking under the hashtag #microbladingnyc. I got mine done by a lovely artist named Belinda at Icon Microblading in New York City. She’s amazing! It normally ranges between $300-800 depending on where you live and where you go. This price includes the initial visit and a touch up appointment. Is it worth it? Heck yes! Your eyebrows can really define your face. I feel like a new woman! I used to use a pencil to fill them in but now I can wake up and go! Your artist will create the perfect set of brows based on your wants and needs. Check Groupon for Microblading in your area.

TIP: Before I purchase anything on Groupon, I always review the salon/spa first on Yelp. Going to Asia any time soon? I hear it’s a fraction of the cost there!

How long does Microblading last and how is the healing process?
Microblading can last 1-2 years depending on skin type. They may fade quicker if your skin is oily. The healing process after Microblading is quite the commitment. Everyone’s skin heals differently and it’s normal to develop patchy areas or the appearance of fading after the first treatment. It is important to understand that this is a two part process and the second touch up treatment will complete the procedure and, after healing, you will see the finished result. The second appointment happens 4-6 weeks after your first appointment. Post-care includes…

  • You cannot get your eyebrows wet for 2 weeks. You cannot swim or sweat or get any product or water on them. Showering can be tricky!
  • During the healing process, your eyebrows start to flake off and scab. DO NOT PICK!
  • They will be swollen for a few hours and redness can last a few days.
  • In the beginning, hair strokes WILL appear crisp, darker and bold at first, but will soften up in appearance as the tissue heals. The area will shed taking some color with it this is normal.
  • I also found they were very ITCHY. The photos above are after the second appointment. You can tell in these photos that my brows are darker and still a little red a few days after.
  • PATIENCE is required in the healing process!

Does it hurt?

NO! They use really heavy numbing cream. I didn’t feel a thing! You can hear the scraping of the blade which is weird. Some blogs I read said it was a little painful…but, my artist was really good about numbing me and made sure I didn’t feel any pain. According to New York dermatologist Dendy Engelman, there’s little risk involved—as long as all the devices and facilities are sterilized and clean, and a licensed professional is at hand, the chance of infection is no greater than an ordinary tattoo. Be sure to prepare for the procedure. DO NOT use any Retin-a products or take an anti-inflammatory before hand. I accidentally took ibuprofen and we had to stop the procedure because I was bleeding too much. DO NOT drink coffee, alcohol, or any energy drinks within 24-48 hours. Anyways, my brows are finally healed back to a natural color and I don’t have to fill them in anymore! One less step in the morning! Thanks for reading!
